The Story
What started it all...
I always knew my career would revolve around food. I spent hours at seafood warehouses before I was even out of my mother’s belly – you see, the seafood business was my parents’ first child, and I was their second. When I was just a little 4-year old girl, my dad would bring me to seafood events all around the country, and although I had no idea what was going on, the food we got to try always stuck with me.

Then came the beef
Then came a life-changing experience at the ripe young age of 14 that expanded beyond my seafood bubble: my first bite of Wagyu beef. To get a feel for the hype behind the Japanese delicacy, my family decided to try it for ourselves – and we were blown away. We were determined to bring this to more people so they, too, could experience what we did. In 2008, we purchased the Wagyu farm and started our journey to perfect the genetics of 100% Fullblood Wagyu to make it identical to that of the Wagyu from Japan.

The learning process
I’ve always loved and wanted to be a part of the food industry. To learn more about what aspect I wanted to be in (and some extra cash never hurts!), I worked in restaurants throughout my undergrad, and continued to work at the family seafood and beef business to learn the ins and outs of it. I wanted to put my all into it when I was done with school, so I decided to get a double Masters in International Business and Entrepreneurship & Innovation in London and San Francisco.

Meeting the other half
This is where Jonathan (Co-founder of Boat & Barn) and I met. Sharing a love of cooking and food from around the world, Jonathan and I bonded over trying to create new recipes and trying new restaurants together. Jonathan being from Germany offered a whole new perspective to cooking and life that allowed us to be innovative with food. Jonathan and I turned our apartment into the hub for dinner parties with friends from all around the world – we love bringing people together through delicious food and new experiences, which is where the Food Squad came to life.
