Alaska’s staple Sockeye Salmon with its bright red color, gamey flavor, and smooth texture. Its distinct red color comes from its diet of krill and plankton which also develops its great flavor. Sockeye is full of Omega-3 fatty acids which helps to prevent and manage heart diseases.
Sockeye Salmon travels far around Alaska living their first 1-4 years in freshwater streams and then migrating out to sea into salt water for 3 years. After their time in the ocean, they move back into fresh water for spawning. Fisheries only catch Sockeye in their ocean cycle around the Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska, and Southeast Alaska.
